Newborn Lifestyle Session: What Should I Wear?
Figuring out what to wear after having a baby can be frustrating! As a mom of 3 myself, I totally understand how confusing and overwhelming putting an outfit together post-baby can feel. So let my experience and photography expertise help take some of that decision fatigue away for you.
Wear what’s comfortable. I know that might sound super obvious and way too easy, but it’s SO true. I’ve had clients wear jammies, comfy pants and baggy t-shirts, or flowy dresses to accomodate their postpartum bodies that are still swollen and healing from birth. So I give you permission to wear those sweatpants in order to feel at ease. Today, sportswear and comfortable clothes are actually stylish, so you can get away with something that is comfortable AND cute.
Wear something you already own. Heading out on a shopping trip just days after having a baby can be daunting and exhausting, not to mention a recipe for feeling defeated about this new body you’re getting used to post pregnancy. You’ll likelly still be wearing maternity clothing, so pick your favorite pair of elastic-waist jeans and flowy top (one that has easy access for nursing if you’re breastfeeding) or maternity dress that made you feel so cute and special. If you’re really set on purchasing something new, keep in mind that it takes several weeks (and for many, several months) for your body to adjust after pregnancy. The uterus itself needs time to shrink back to it’s pre-pregnancy form, so pick a size that reflects your pregnant body.
Stick to neutrals. I personally love how creams, browns, tans, mid and soft blues, as well as mid and soft greens photograph. Plus, they usually compliment decor in client’s homes. There’s no need to be matchy-matchy with everyone’s outfits (unless that’s something you really want for your session). Pinterest has a lot of great suggestions on pairing clolors for outfits, so if you start by choosing your outfit and work in everyone else’s outfits based on what you’re wearing, that will help guide the wardrobe choice. I recommend thinking about this before your baby is born, especially if you have other children who you need to dress, so that you can take away the stress of gathering outfits after baby’s birth.
My biggest advice about what to wear during a lifestyle newborn session is to wear something that’s comfortable and that you feel good in. A newborn session is meant to capture this chapter in your life as new parents and focus on the details of your baby as they are in this moment of their life.
